Eccentric Diaphragm Pumps

Diaphragm pumps can be used for moving air and other gases, but also for generating compressed air and vacuum

Eccentric diaphragm pumps from Schwarzer Precision are driven by electric motors. An eccentric is attached to the motor shaft, which converts the rotational movement of the motor into an oscillating up and down movement of the connecting rod. This connecting rod in turn moves the diaphragm.

The downwards movement of the diaphragm creates a vacuum, which sucks the pumped medium via an inlet valve into the pump chamber. As soon as the diaphragm moves upwards again, the pumped medium is pressurized. The resulting overpressure closes the inlet valve, at the same time the outlet valve opens and the pumped medium flows out.

The diaphragm, which is circumferentially clamped, separates the pumped medium from both the motor and the ambient air, protecting the motor from the medium. This is particularly important when pumping aggressive gases. At the same time, the well sealed pump head ensures that the pumped medium is not contaminated by impurities from the ambient air. This enables both unadulterated measurement results in gas analysis and the generation of particularly pure compressed air.

For physical reasons, eccentric diaphragm pumps do not generate a completely uniform air or gas flow. Oscillating pressure fluctuations occur, which are referred to as pulsations. For applications which do not tolerate pulsations, we successfully use two-headed pumps. The pressure fluctuations generated by the respective heads are "superimposed" in such a way that an almost pulsation-free flow is achieved.

In addition to adjusting the pneumatic performance, diaphragm pumps should always be adapted to their specific application regarding required working life. The working life of a diaphragm pump depends to a large extent on the motor used, which in turn has a strong influence on the costs of the pump. In applications with intermittent duty cycles, the pumps are sometimes only used for a few minutes each day. In such cases, inexpensive iron core motors offer an optimal cost-benefit ratio. Particularly high-quality motors ( e.g. coreless and BLDC motors) are available for applications requiring continuous pump operation
